Car Rental Ireland to Scotland

Is it possible to rent a car in Ireland and take it by ferry to Scotland for a portion of a trip or is it better to fly between Dublin and Edinburgh and rent cars in both places?

It's almost guaranteed that separate rentals will be cheaper, because of steep one-way drop-off fees.

You will also find that most rental companies do not even permit one-way rentals between Ireland and the U.K. - for example, autoeurope.com.

Linda,

I've never considered renting in Ireland and dropping off in Scotland, but suspect there would be high drop off fees. Travelling from Dublin to Edinburgh by air and renting two cars would be the best choice (IMHO).

Good luck!

We flew from Edinburgh into Shannon. Easier to rent car than taking the ferry. Even if you could drop the car off in Scotland would probably be very expensive. I had checked into it. I think it was around $100 bucks per person to fly and much easier and about 1 to 1 1/2 hour flight.

Thanks to all who responded. It sounds like flying would be the best option.

When I rented a car in Ireland the contract specifically forbid taking it on a ferry without prior permission.
