I am working on planning transportation for the Slovenia portion of our trip this May. There are two of us, husband and wife in our 30’s. We have traveled in Europe before but only using public transportation. We are planning to rent a car for Slovenia and then continue on the rest of our trip with public transportation. We are planning to pick up the car in Bled and wanted to drop it off in Postojna so that we could avoid driving in Ljubjana. The only company I have found that does that is Hertz. Does anyone know if the Hertz rental location in Postojna is close to public transportation (bus or train) so that we can continue to Ljubjana after dropping off the car? Or, is it more logical to drop the car in Ljubjana—although we would want to avoid driving in the main part of the city? Thanks for any help and advice!
We rented a car (drop off and pick up in Ljubljana) to drive to Bled and the surrounding area. Driving in Ljubljana was no big deal--traffic was not bad at all, it's not a very big town. That was our first time renting a car in Europe and we had no problems. If driving to Ljubljana is easier for you than trying to orchestrate something in Postojna, I would do it.
Thanks for the advice! We'll certainly consider dropping the rental in Ljubjana instead. We were just nervous about trying to navigate in a foreign city but your reassurance helps.
Try to get a map of Ljubljana and pin point where you're going. If I remember right, there are two main ways to get into the town from the highway and both are fairly direct and clearly marked. One word of advice--if you are nervous about driving in a foreign city, do not take a side trip to Trieste! We did that and it was crazy! Countless switchbacks, scooters zooming in and out, traffic circles, etc. Also, the Slovenian highways are all toll roads so make sure you have some cash on hand when you leave Bled.
