Car rental in Mainz

I am looking for a car rental agency where I can pick up a car at the Mainz train station (or at a city location within walking distance). I tried autoeurope and although they have the train station as an option, no cars are available. Can anyone help?

Oops, sorry my suggestion was backwards. Perhaps you could take a train into Germany and rent the car there and turn it in at Mainz. You usually get better rates by renting in Germany than France plus you would not incur the high drop off charge from one country to another.

Connie, you may want to try gemut.com. Have used them twice for rental cars in Germany and they have offered the best rate. They are a broker and deal with several rental companies on a large volume so they have some leverage for lower rates. Also, excellent customer service and they will quote you a rate in U.S. dollars which helps you plan your budget. They will hold that rate even if the dollar continues to decline versus the Euro. If the dollar should strengthen before your trip they clain they will adjust your rental cost in your favor but you would probably have to request it. I believe gemut is now associated with Autoeurope in some way so you may run into the same problem in connection with the availability. It is worth a try however and Mr. Bestor at Gemut is very helpful. Good website too with good tips on driving in Germany. Good luck.

Thanks for the help. I will contact Gemut. I looked at Europecar yesterday and the cost for renting a car from Strasbourg to drop off in Mainz was over $500 for 3 days...ridiculous.

If you pick up in one country and drop in another it gets expensive. Perhaps you could drop it back in Germany at one of the towns along the Germany/France border. You could then take the train for a short ride to Strasbourg.

Sixt is right across from the train station and even as budget car you get e.g. a Mercedes A-Class or a 1 series BMW or Audi A3. Most other rental providers would give you a Korean car in that category. www.sixt.com
