Car rental in Germany and Austria

Hello Everyone, In September my two buddies and I will be biking and hiking in Germany , Austria and Switzerland. We plan on picking up the car at the Frankfurt Airport and dropping it off in Passau Germany. My question to everyone who has rented a car there is, What is the best agency to use these days? In 2021 we use Budget and wasn't real happy with them. What company is doing the best job these days? Thanks for any help you can provide!

God Bless, Monte

We’ve used Europcar (booked via AutoEurope) twice in Germany. Our next rental is with Hertz in n Munich. What did you not like about Hertz?

The premier rental operation anywhere is Enterprise Car Rental. They also own Alamo and National car rentals. I use Hertz usually because I have a corporate discount number that gets the absolutely lowest rates available. I've also rented through AutoEurope--a New England based consolidator.

Note that not all the famous name car rental companies in Europe are the same as in the US. Many are franchise operations, and they're not necessarily run as well there as in the U.S. I would tend to avoid Avis and Sixt in Europe.

Also be aware that European car rental companies are victims of supply chain problems, and rental prices are often high right now. You can go on Expedia or other websites and compare prices of the different rental companies. Pricing can vary greatly in Europe for the same type vehicles.

I don't rent cars but if I did I would use Sixt, a local German company with a good reputation.

We have used Avis most of the time and have had success with their rentals when we have traveled to Germany,Ausria, and France.

Hey Monte, I use Auto Europe for rentals. The last time I rented a car in Germany (2019) was in Frankfurt. I alway go with the best deal and so far have not been disappointed. If you absolutely don’t want to use Budget you could disregard them and choose another company. Last year I had rentals from Avis, Sixt, Arnold Clark (Scotland) and Europcar. They were all good.

Monte, I've been using Auto Europe for car rentals since 1996, including my last trip to Germany in 2022. It acts as a broker for other agencies, so you can find the best price. I think the agency I used this past year via Auto Europe was Avis, but I've also used Sixt, Europcar and others. I've always been happy with them and have never had any unpleasant surprises.

I am wondering which car rental company you used. My family and I will be traveling in that area in November. Picking up in Salzburg and returning to Munich.

Thanks so much!
