Car rental in Germany

We are planning to rent a car for our trip to Germany in June. My questions are:

We are planning to overnight in Prague, and perhaps drive into Poland to visits the wifes' ancestral hometown. I have been reading that some rental agencies will not allow certain brands to go into Poland or the Czech Republic. Most agencies seem to only show the brands that are excluded. Has anyone dealt with a situation similar?

The other question I have is about using a debit card to make the rental. We do not carry credit cards. Any advice on this?

Thanks

Get a credit card now. They are invaluable for travel. Lots of fraud protection. With a debit card, you are potentially liable for all the money in your bank account.

I'm not up on this. The last time I rented a car in Germany to travel across borders was 20+ years ago. When I told the agent I was renting to drive to Italy, he literally snatched the BMW keys out of my hand. Had to settle for an Audi.

Most rental cars prohibit travel to certain countries, you need to check with the individual company what their conditions are.

For most premium cars a deposit is required from which only a credit card will suffice, you will not be able to secure the deposit on a debit card. Also, if you decline the additional insurance you will often be expected to secure a deposit on a credit card. I've had one occasion with Avis when I was required to provide two credit cards for a rental and that was for just an Audi although it was in Newcastle so that may have had some bearing!

You should have a Visa credit card with no foreign transaction fees or be prepared to carry a LOT of cash. As stated before, debit cards are not accepted everywhere and in my opinion are more vulnerable. I only use a debit card in ATM withdrawls. You should call in your reservations for a car rental and tell them where the car is to be used. Most major rental car firms don't have a problem with the country you listed. Smaller rental firms do.

Yes, policies vary by rental company and by car rented. When I rented from Hertz a few years ago, I was allowed to go into Czech Republic but not Poland. Info is usually available if you dig on each company's web site. Sixt rental is widespread in Europe and from my experience has fewest country restrictions. Agree with others that a credit card is much better than debit for travel. Enjoy your trip!
