In early April we want to rent a car in Bordeaux and return it in Lyon, preferably on the west side of the city to avoid the heaviest traffic. We need a car that's an automatic, with room for 4 adults who carry Rick Steves' size luggage. Any recommendations for companies in France?

Have you looked at AutoEurope? I would start there.
A car rental looks expensive. I did two dummy bookings for autoeurope and zest car rental just for one day April 9-10. Depending on the size, the basic rental it's about €170 to €200. And the additional drop-off fee is about €130. How much is the train for four people?
I don't know what type of luggage Rick Steves uses. Using a one week rental through Autoeurope, a mid sized automatic with full coverage is US $660 with Hertz. You may be able to save some cash if your credit card covers car insurance abroad.
Bear in mind, companies rent you a CLASS of car not a specific car. And while they will accept a reservation for an automatic, they're not likely to guarantee that one will be available at the time and place you need it. You need to address that very clearly with them and make sure every record indicates it must be an automatic, and then you need a plan B if that doesn't work out when you get there.
