Car rental in France and England

My husband mentioned that someone told him he did not take out insurance on his car rental because American Express covers it. Is this correct?

I've read in a few places that people were satisfied with autoeurope.com so we're thinking of going through them.

Is it better to rent from over here? What if we change our dates of pickup once we got over to France or England? It's pretty hard to know which days for sure we could travel around the countryside in both countries.

Autoeurope is pretty flexible. They have great customer service agents on their 800 number. Just call and ask what your options are.

It has been best to reserve from over here - although with today's communication technology, I don't know why you couldn't reserve on the website while you're on the Web in Europe and simply print out your voucher. On the Web, no one knows you're in Marseilles...

As for insurance - call your credit card and call your own agent. Spell out the worst possible event - I crash, kill someone and the car burns in an inferno. What's my liability? Fortunately, most European countries require the crash-burn-and-kill-someone coverage in the rental car price. But you need to ask.

Thanks Doug. Will look into it. True that they wouldn't know I'm already in UK if I book online from there, unless they check the IP.
