We will be staying in London Central for a week. We want to take a few days off and drive to Ilfracombe in Devon. We are trying to figure out where we can change from public transportation (tube/railway) to a car rental spot in a town outside London Central. We've driven in Ireland a lot, but not dense cities.

Hi Jackie. One option would be take the tube to Heathrow airport and rent there. Would probably take a couple of hours total between tube, shuttle to rent a car, etc. Others may have quicker / better ideas... Enjoy your trip!

To avoid the extra fee for picking up a car at the airport, you could pick one up at Slough. Auto Europe has two outlets there. The one on Farnham Road is within walking distance of the Slough train station and the one on Buckingham Avenue is an even shorter walk from the Burnham(Bucks) train station which is one stop beyond the Slough station. Trains go from London Paddington to Slough. Some go on to Burnham(Bucks). For other departure times you'll need to make a connection at the Slough station for the 4-minute ride to Burnham(Bucks).
