Car rental from gemut.com

I've been renting cars from gemut.com for years, mostly because it's easy, and I know they are a phone call away if I run into a problem. I've only needed airport rental desk help once, but they answered immediately when I called from FRA early morning, which was after midnight on the west coast where they are.

They also advertise they will match a better rate if you find one. I've never tested that before, but this week I received a promo email from AutoEurope about a 15% price drop on fall rentals in Italy. I have an October AutoEurope rental from Florence that I booked through gemut. I didn't even bother doing the math, but forwarded the promo email to Andy and asked "Does this work for me?" Within 24 hours he responded with the 15% reduction in my rate and said the refund will be on my credit card in a few days. I continue to be a happy customer with gemut.

Ruth,

It's good to hear that business these days are willing to honour their price guarantees. I've always heard good things about Gemut and wouldn't hesitate to use their services.

I too have been using gemut.com for my overseas auto rentals for many years. I call them first, usually that's the only effort I need to put in. They've arranged rentals for me all over Europe, from the popular places to some more edgy, far-flung ones. I've always had great service, similar to what Ruth posts above. Only a few times, in places where they didn't really do business (eg Japan, Australia, the Faroe Islands, Mexico) did I have to go searching and book a car myself. Otherwise I give Andy the parameters, and in a day or two he gets back to me with what I needed.

Another satisfied customer here. I'll continue to use them whenever I need a car in Europe.

I'm certainly glad that you have had a satisfactory experience using Gemut.

However, I would never use them. I have, on many occasions, solicited a quote from Gemut to compare renting a car to using public transportation. I have always specified that I want the quote to include full CDW coverage. If I use public transportation, and the train gets damaged, I have no liability for the damage. The only way to compare costs, apples-to-apples, it with full CDW. Gemut has always refused to quote a car rental with complete CDW coverage, instead telling my to use the insurance that comes with my credit card. Having read my credit card's insurance agreement, I realize that they give themselves plenty of excuses not to cover any incident, like requiring that I provide them with any and all documentation that they might required, whether it exists in the country where my claim originated or not.

So when I ask Gemut for a quote with complete coverage and they don't provide what I ask for, that is a huge red flag for me.

Lee, interesting that you've had this problem. I never have. In countries that don't accept my AMEX coverage, like Italy, I always get the zero deductible, bring it back in a bag insurance, and gemut writes the contract that way. On occasion they might have given a quote with a deductible, but if I ask to change it to zero deductible they do so. Certainly never refused to.

I've probably done at least a dozen rentals in Europe with them. All good experiences.
