Has anyone rented from Europcar in France and, if so, what has been your experience? Several postings on other sites related to Europcar rental experiences have not been very positive which has made me somewhat suspect.
Six years ago I booked a rental car through the consolidator AutoEurope and picked it up in Nice. The car was provided by Europcar and the service I received was fine.
We are just back from France and rented through Europcar and they were great to deal with. Picked up our car (Renault, manual trans and diesel) in Beaune on a Sunday morning and drove it for a week around Provence. Returned it the following Sunday in Avignon. We have used them in Italy and the UK also.
I also have used Europcar in France - picked up in Marseille and the service was great, car was reasonable and reliable.
Last summer we booked a rental car with Europcar through AutoEurope. We picked the car up at the train station in Lille, France and dropped it off in Caen. At both ends the rental offices were extremely professional and easy to deal with. We paid a train station surcharge but were not charged an extra fee to pick up the car in one place and drop it off in another.
We also rented from AutoEurope and got the car from Europcar. We picked it up near the Porte d'Italie in Paris and dropped it off a week later at the train station in Perpignan. When getting the car we noticed a spot of indescribable gunk on the car, took a photo, showed it to the agent, and he duly wrote something on the rental agreement. Otherwise and even including this little incident, all went well. Good luck.
Rented from them many times (10 at least), never had any problem. Indeed, once a very small office in Italian countryside didn't have the category I rented or anything above that wasn't reserved (their fleet was like 8 or 10 cars only), so I had to settle for a smaller one, but we're dully refunded the difference.
I have always reserved through Autoeurope and just about every time have received the car from Europcar. The advantage of reserving through Autoeurope is that they have American staff available 24/7 to deal with any problems on a toll-free phone number. I haven't seen noticeable complaints about Europcar. If there are any problems, Autoeurope can deal with them. One issue that Americans may notice is that the rental process generally takes longer and language can be difficult.
We also have never had any problems with them on many trips.
