Hello, My wife and I would like to rent a car in Tirana, Albania and travel through the Balkans including North Macedonia, Kosovo, Montenegro, Croatia. Is anyone aware of a rental company that would allow a one-way drop as well as those border crossings with the rental car? Thanks much. Rhett
I ran up on a good website for travel in Albania, and it includes a section you can sign onto about rental cars. I've found returning autos in countries other than where the car is registered can be very expensive as the vehicles have to be physically transported back to their original country.

We often travel by bus or train from country to country and then find a centrally located place to do day trips out of by rental car.
From Albania up to Slovenia is not the easiest to make by roads, and distances are pretty far along the eastern side of the Adriatic. I understand they're finally building a road from Greece to Slovenia, and that should really open the region up to the modern world.
Hi Rhett,
My girlfriend and I are thinking about the same thing, I read some old forums on Tripadvisor that it should be possible.
Someone wrote that through https://gorentalbania.al it was possible. I just started the research myself now.
Did you book something? And when are you traveling?
Wish I could help, but it sounds like a wonderful trip if you can get the logistics worked out!
Budget shows a Tirana pick up Dubrovnik drop off is possible ( ~$200 per week PLUS an ~$500 one way drop fee)
I didn't read all the fine print about any country exclusions; left that for you. :-)
Thanks to all, after some extensive research I ended up going with Budget. The one-way drops are high $450 but there was no way around it. It's going to run about $95/day all in for an automatic, mid-size SUV.
Thanks for reporting back! While high, it may be worth it to not have to juggle multiple rentals. And good to know it can be done.
Rhett, have you completed your trip? I am also wanting to do this trip, and would love any tips you have. Including how many nights you were there!
Thanks!
Hi, We are actually in the middle of the trip, currently in the Albanian Alps in Theth. To answer your questions we ended up going with Budget rental. We are dropping the car in Dubrovnik so will have to pay a $450 one way drop fee. That takes the per day rate from around $40 to $90. We are in the Balkans for 10 days. We needed to change SIM cards as the Europe based cards (which we purchased in Italy don't work in the Balkans so we purchased another one Tirana). No big deal, $15. I would say 10 is a pretty good duration. Maybe a bit longer if you like hiking. We went Albania>Macedonia>Kosovo>Albania>Montenegro>Croatia. Hope that helps. The people have been amazing, above and beyond helpful. Safe travels..... Rhett
I'm looking to do something similar, pick up a Budget car in Tirana, Albania and drop off in Tivat, Montenegro. How was all the paperwork and insurance at the borders? Did the Budget team give you all the paperwork you needed to get across borders OK? Did you get the appropriate insurance and were you asked at the border? Any paperwork "lessons learned" that you'd share?
And I'll ask another question I saw elsewhere -- it looks like Budget's ratings are pretty low -- like 6.2/10.0. Are you happy with them (so far)?
Hello, i'd hate to be the bearer of bad news but that's kinda impossible, renting a car in Albania and drop-ing it off to Montenegro is going to cost you a lot of money, by default it's not doable.
Sorry Dude, I already did it. Picked up in Tirana airport and dropped in Dubrovnik airport. It sure does work. The one-way drop was an extra $450 with Budget. Well worth the freedom, no doubling back, no standing around waiting for buses, no switching cars every country, plus the extraordinary opportunities afforded one when you travel 'independently'. We met way more people, took way more photo's and had many more unexpected, joyful travelism moments.
