My family of 4 will be traveling to Italy in July. We are arriving in Rome and will be heading to Trevi (Umbria) for 1 week. After Trevi, we have reservations in Capri. What's the best way to rent a car? Pick up at FCO or Rome Termini on arrival in Italy and then drop off at Rome Termini and taking the fast train to Naples? Any suggestions would be much appreciated.
When flying into Rome and going north, we pick up rental cars at FCO. It is a straightforward drive from there to get on to the autostrada for your journey to Trevi. The Slow Travel website has a very good guide on picking up and returning cars to FCO (particularly returning!) http://www.slowtrav.com/italy/driving/car_rental_rome.htm As to your journey to Naples, I will leave it to others who may know of an alternative to catching the train to Naples in Rome.
We took both the fast and slow train to Naples. Not sure if this is always true but the fast train was a newer train. We actually didn't mind the slow train but loved the savings. It was about half the price and took about half to 3/4 hour longer but for the savings we didn't mind. Both drop you off at same station in Naples. I seem to remember that we got off at the wrong station the first time, one stop too early so be sure you get off at Centrale station. Enjoy. Someone else can tell you how to get to Capri from there as we just sent to Sorrento. Good luck.
