Hi,
I am thinking of maybe renting a car for the day while in Salzburg for a day trip to Mauthausen. Not sure of what day I want to but is it easy to rent one while there?

Look at kayak.com. There's a slew for sixty or seventy bucks a day. Others might recommend autoeurope, but they seem to be a bit more.

It is really no different than renting a car here in North America. You'll see Hertz, Europcar, Budget everywhere. Just walk in an rent...as easy as that.
One thing you may want to think about is getting an international driver's license before your trip if you're worried about getting stopped without speaking German. We never do while in Western Europe. But definitely need one once you go into Eastern Europe.

AutoEurope is a good consolidator (although an opaque one) that will get you a good rate, but in my experience they have a 3-day minimum rental period.
