is it possible to rent a car - pick it up in Munich and return it in Venice - Hertz and Thrifty say no?

Autoeurope will let you do it.
In the "Quick Rates" box look for the sentence that begins "All rates guaranteed" and click where it says "for international one-way rentals click here."

Are you aware that if you can find a company that will do this, you will pay a hefty drop off charge for returning it to a different country?
