Driving from Shropshire (west England)- don't want to drive into London. What would be a good drop-off point in the west of London with good tube or rail connections into central London?

Slough, is a great place to drop off cars. Then you can take the train into London.

If it was me, I'd want to avoid traffic around London, which would rule out Slough.
Any number of cities coud give you rail access to London and would provide a chance to tour through some nice parts of the country. For example, you might wander south and east through the Cotswolds and catch a train at Oxford. That's about an hour's trip into Paddington. If you wanted to get closer with the car, go on into Reading, where you can also catch a Paddington-bound train. (The Oxford station is about a 10-minute walk from the center of town, so it would be easy to schedule in a day's tour of the city.)
The small increase in the train fare would be, for me, more than worth it compared to the driving hassle near London.
