Car Rental/Driving Bruges to Bastogne and then to Luxembourg

Hi all! We are planning a trip in early November where we are starting in Amsterdam and then heading by train to Bruges. We were hoping to rent a car in Bruges and then after a day or so head to Bastogne and then down to Luxembourg and hopefully return the car there. Any thoughts on a good car rental company or any suggestions if you think car rental would be tricky? Thanks in advance!

Get a quote for the cost of renting a car in Belgium and returning it in Luxembourg. Generally, rental cars have to be transported back to their home country before they can be rented again, and you pay that cost. The distance is not great, but see how much it is before you commit to this plan.

What you might do is take the train to Luxembourg, rent the car there and drive to Bastogne, then return it in Luxembourg.

Luxembourg City to Bastogne is a relatively short drive. If you're going to Bastogne you need to know that the American Memorial is fenced off for repair. Your best bet is to visit the museum at the Barracks. In Luxembourg (the country) I suggest the National Military Museum is better than the Bastogne one; they have a much more extensive collection. And don't forget to pay your respects at the American Cemetery. I was there a couple days ago and the grounds are being prepped for winter and the Information room is under construction, but it's still worth the visit.

Driving in Luxembourg sucks. It's a lot of tunnels, with speed limits and cameras, joined by open road with no limits, so it's a go fast, slow down, very un-scenic drive.

Plan on rain.

Sam’s suggestion is spot on about the additional drop off charge in a different city. It can be significant. 6 years ago we did the Bruge, Bastogne, Luxembourg drive as part of a much larger driving tour. We stayed at the Crown Plaza in Bruge. It was a great location. However, make sure you have a very good GPS to use to get there. Bruge was a great place to walk around and explore. In Bastogne we stayed at the Hotel Melba. This is right around the corner from the 101st Airborne Museum. There was an information booth at the time we were there. You exited the hotel and turned left, walked to the next intersection and it was across the street. Bastogne is another nice little city to walk around. You will need a car to explore the surrounding WW2 sites. The Mardasson Memorial next to the Bastogne War Museum was under construction when we were there. That looked like a nice place to get a view of some of the area.
On the drive to Luxembourg city, I do not recall tunnels or traffic of any concern. We stayed at the Double Tree in Luxembourg city. Staying there required us to drive to the center. Once there, we walked everywhere we desired to go. I wished I had known about the National Military Museum.
That is a very nice and educational trip that you have planned. So much to see. Enjoy!

We rented a car in Brussels in April and drove to Bastogne for a day tour of the WW2 battle sites. We stayed at Hotel Melba and loved walking Bastogne and seeing their love of America and the incredible sites and museums they have maintained. Since we were so close to Luxembourg we drove into Luxembourg City that Saturday morning….not too difficult with our iPhone GPS and it took us right to the downtown city market and parking garage. We surfaced to a wonderful market day and walked the city……beautiful. We visited the American cemetery there in Luxembourg right by the airport to see General Patton’s grave…..beautiful place that is maintained so well. Returned to Hotel Melba and drove back to Brussels the next day and returned our car there at the train station. P S……..We trained from Brugge to Brussels, rented our car at the train station and then drove to Bastogne.

The National Speed Limit on motorways in the country of Luxembourg is the same as in France and Germany - 130 kph.

The difference with Germany is that there are no unrestricted areas.

Of course you have to slow down in tunnels, usually 80, occasionally 90 kph. Just like in Switzerland.

Both Luxembourg and Switzerland are safety conscious. There have been far too many disastrous tunnel collisions in the recent past - Mont Blanc tunnel, Gotthard tunnel, St Bernard tunnel, etc.

They take the EC Directive of 2004 seriously.

Slow down - stay alive.

We took the train to Lille, France, picked up a car to tour Belgium, Luxembourg and France and had many options for returning the car in France, you could try Metz or Strasbourg. We ended up returning at CDG.

I'm surprised by the comment regarding driving in Luxembourg. We had a great time, Luxembourg is lovely. We didn't drive in Luxembourg City, we stayed on the outskirts, and stayed in a couple other cities, as well. I don't recall tunnels, and we were all over Luxembourg. I remember lovely green rolling hills and castles. We've been to a lot of scenic countries. Luxembourg is right up there with New Zealand, Switzerland, etc.
