Car rental & driver’s permit

Hi all: is this drivers permit a thing? We are renting a car for a day in Slovenia and was curious if we do indeed need a permit. We are staying in Slovenia.
Thanks!

Even if you aren’t required to show it when you pick up your car, I never have, if there is some sort of incident with the car you will definitely need it. It is easy to get at AAA and is good for 12 months. It’s inexpensive and if you don’t bring photos they will take them there for a small cost.

Something else to keep in mind - If you do have an accident , and do not have an IDP , your insurance underwriter may very well deny a claim on the grounds that you were not properly licensed. If you think that insurance companies act in your best interests as opposed to their own , you are mistaken . Twenty bucks for the permit is small potatoes for the peace of mind it affords.

As far as I have researched this issue, this appears to be the internet equivalent of an urban myth.

Well, then I suggest that you avoid obtaining one when you rent a car and take your chances .

I am just looking for data-driven advice, not fear-mongering and rumor-driven advice.

Has there ever been an instance of what you suggest?

If you searched it you can find a trail of the suggestion that this has happened going back in various travel forums, it has propagated from one forum to another for at least 15 years, spreading like a virus and seemingly becoming a real thing, but it isn't a real thing and it hasn't happened.

The concept I described has predated the internet by at least fifty years . I am well into my seventies, and had the good fortune of being educated by a close relative who ran a large insurance agency . That you see this kind of reasoning as fear mongering or whatever you would like to call it , indicates a lack of understanding how insurance underwriters function . As I said If you think this is invalid , then don't bother with the permit. As a matter of consideration, I am on a protracted visit in Europe right now ,and while all my travel is by rail and public transportation, I came prepared ,as I have done for the past twelve years, with an IDP, just in case . As a final point , I was involved in fender bender in France in 2011 and the underwriter did ,in point of fact , check on my licensing. Glad I had the IDP . EDIT - A correction , my wife reminded me that it was 2015 in Northeast France near Amiens .
