If we rent a car in Rome and return it in Aostia or another city in Italy is there a charge for taking the car up into switzerland for a couple days? Do they ask you? Would they know? Looks like we could save $1000 to return car in same country.

You can take it where you want without a problem. I routinely hit seven or eight countries, go back and forth arcoss the channel, etc - - all completely within the rules. Dropping it in the same country you got it is the way to do it to save money.
