I am considering using AutoEurope for a car rental out of Switzerland (Basel Airport) - does anyone have recent experience w/ AutoEurope? Smooth rental or problems due to voucher system?
Always have had great experiences. Two advantages include its 24/7 toll-free telephone service located in Maine, and its pledge to match a competing offer if you find one better.
We used AutoEurope for our car rental in Spain (2010). Brand new car and not a problem with voucher. 4,000 k later - easy no questions return. We would use them again in an instant!
AutoEurope is not a car rental, but an agency. They rent from Hertz and Europcar (mainly). Sometimes from Sixt. I've used their services a handful of times, including isntances like cancelling, changing and postponing a reservation, and have always been well cared for by their help desk, by mail or phone.
AutoEurope is a car broker who arranges for your rental from agencies such as Sixt, Europcar, Hertz or Avis. On my recent rental from Avis at the Frankfurt airport, I was glad I had a copy of my voucher from AutoEurope in hand. They were going to charge me more than was quoted and arranged for through AutoEurope for some of the options; i.e., snow tires and an additional driver. It was Avis, not AutoEurope, who was trying to get over. I also had a free upgrade from Economy to Compact but they didn't honor it because it wasn't stated on the voucher. On our 2010 trip, we used the rentral broker Kemwel, which is part of AutoEurope. They arranged a Europcar for us. It was in a small town versus an airport so it was less expensive. Europcar allows for a second driver, for no extra charge as long as that person is a family member. I'm mentioning this because unless you talk to an AutoEurope rep on the phone, you would never know this. Check their prices online, and then call them. They will meet the prices they quote online. Also, AutoEurope will meet/beat Kemwel's prices. The only hitch with Kemwel is that you have to give them a 48 hr. (maybe longer, can't remember) notice for cancellation to get your full rental charges back, whereas, you can cancel AutoEurope up to the minute of pickup. Both agencies are great. Gemut auto broker is also worth a call or email. PM me if you have any other questions.
I have used them twice, most recently in March/April (well, technically three times, because the last time was two different rentals on the trip.) They are great about matching/beating rates/deals from other agencies/consolidators, and I have had no problems with them. I did have a few small problems with Avis (they didn't provide the class of car I paid for), and I neglected to follow-up on it when I returned home, so I won't beat up on AutoEurope for it. I tried using Gemut, and while they are lovely people, their availability was a bit limited, and they book through AutoEurope, too.
