We will be arriving by train from Paris. Is renting a car at the airport easy? Is it easy to drive out of the area? We were thinking to taking the train out of Paris and then rent a car. Any ideas on the best alternative. Thanks
Kent...God knows I've "ranted" at CDG too many times to count! ;) In any event, the airport is an option, but you may pay a higher fee to rent from there. You can always pick a rental agency office located in the Paris suburbs, also easily accessible by RER commuter train, that may cost you less. If you're heading south or west of Paris and you like the airport option, check renting out of Orly instead of CDG.
Hi Tom.. We have rented a car from here and picked it up at CDG. We always rent from here because it is cheaper. If you are driving south you should rent at Orly. However , it is always better to rent before you go to lock in a better price . Once we rented from CDG and then wanted to go south to Burgundy, so..oo..oo my husband drove the Periferique around Paris. Wow. Sorry about the spelling of the road. It was a major driving experience!!! If you have not done this and don't know the rush hours, etc., I would not do it.We are quite experienced in driving there and it was not relaxing if you get my meaning. Getting on the A6 from Orly is easy and the expressways and tollroads are wonderful to drive. Keep a bag of change for the tolls. You can use up all your coins that way.
You can also pick up your rental at Gare du Nord. You have a straight run to the Peripherique from there.
Tom, my husband and I are renting through autoeurope. We are picking up in Versailles and dropping at CDG. The prices were cheaper and also more cars were offered with total coverage. There also seemed to be more choices. Versailles is easily accesible from RER.
If you pick up your car in Versailles, be prepared for a half mile walk.
