Car rental after arrival

Ed may be the best person to answer this, but any input from others, based on experience, would be welcome. The standard advice for Americans is to rent or at least reserve a car before leaving home in order to save money. But I am considering a one- to three-day rental in Britain -- in the unlikely event the March weather cooperates. How much of a premium is attached when you walk up to a counter once you are in-country, as opposed to reserving the car in advance.

I'm not really sure if the cost savings is significant, but advanced reservations are highly recommended to avoid the chance that no cars are available or that no automatic transmissions are available. If those aren't issues for you, renting on the spot or online a day or two ahead is an option.
