Car Rental

We will be spending a few days post tour in Scotland and plan to rent a car. I understand it is required to get Collision Damage Waiver. Should we reserve a car online before we go? Should we sign up for CDW at that time, or at the pick up point? and What about liability? Is it necessary to purchase separate liabitily insurance?

It's a good idea to have CDW & liability anytime you're in Europe, especially if you're not used to driving on the left. Go to AutoEurope's website and you will see a cost for "all inclusive." This is the total of the rental plus insurance. Reserve it ahead of time (minimum of 3 days rental req'd).

I'd go ahead and reserve it ahead of time, if you wait until you get there you run the risk of a)not having a car, or b)having to pay a lot for what they do have.

Most quotes you'll get will include CDW. Check the fine print to see what they don't include. The CDW will come with a deductible, usually around 1200 euro (depends on the size of the car). To cover that, you'll either need to get the "super CDW" from the rental company or go with a 3rd party, like dailyexcess.com.

You can check with your credit card, too, and see what they'll cover. Some people on here will tell you they've had no problems with the insurance through their credit card, others will have horror stories about being denied after having an accident.
