if we have 5 people and six pieces of luggage what do you suggest for
a rental car in rome, italy. We can not find a rental
company who has large vans. Are large vans hard to
drive especially if we are going to the amalfi coast.

Where to start? Would you consider renting two cars? The six pieces of luggage are going to make a single car for five people impossible. And vans are expensive.
Second question. Why do you think you need to drive to the Amalfi coast? It's notoriously difficult to drive.

I preface by saying that I totally agree with all the other posters, BUT - if you're gutsy, it CAN be done. (After all, buses do it every day.)
A few years ago my brother, in a group of 6 crazy friends, travelled all over Italy in a 9-passenger van. Having been to Italy many times myself, I don't know how they did it, but they did it. They had a great time, and they learned a lot of colorful Italian hand gestures and curse words too.
I'm pretty sure they rented through AutoEurope.
Before you go, your group should draw straws. Loser gets to be the driver. And be sure to get all the insurance you can.
