car or flight to edinburgh

I am from India. I will be travelling to isle of skye in late May. I will be travelling from london and later taking the flight to norway from edinburgh.

Wanted to know if I should be travelling via car, train or flight

Options are:

  1. car from london and return in edinburgh: because of taking it from one location and returning at another the car cost is double but I gain on flexibility or not having to travel to airport (stanstead). How easy is it to drive in UK.
  2. flight to edinburgh and taking car: how easy is it to reach stanstead airport early in the morning.

other options like flight to inverness are very expensive. Pls suggest.

1) If you are from India driving on the left will not be new to you. As long as you learn the road signs and rules, and obey them, you should be OK. It is a long drive from London to Edinburgh. Even longer on to Skye. This would require an overnight stop somewhere.

2) Transport from central London to Stansted is easy, regular trains from London Liverpool station. But how early is early? If you have a departure before 08:00, especially on a budget airline with a long check-in time, you may have problems getting a tube from your hotel and then a train to get to the airport in time.

3) Option 3, train from London to Edinburgh, or perhaps to Inverness. Pick up the hire car there and return it to Edinburgh airport.
I would take the train, but that is partially personnal preference.

The speed limits and distances on road signs in the UK are in miles per hour and in miles, rather than kilometres, but they are in good condition and drivers are courteous (unless you encounter an American tourist in a hired car ;-)).

However, for the distance from London to Edinburgh, we did that by train the first time - takes 4 1/2 to 5 hours. This past August, we landed at Heathrow Airport from the USA, then hopped on the next Virgin Air flight to Edinburgh. The flight time is quick, and there are several airlines than can fly you to Edinburgh for a good price.

Either way works, but consider the cost and time involved, as well as the convenience for you.
