We are planning a trip to visit family in Croatia. We may have a family car to use. I checked with my auto insurance company at home and the definitely will not cover my in Europe. Can I buy insurance to cover my wife and myself as driver of a loaned car? Thank you.

You should first check what your croatian family's insurance covers. The mandatory 3rd party liability will usually cover if you make damage to others but will not cover yourself. this insurance will usually cover regardless of who the driver is, but check first.
