We are renting a car to drive in Switzerland and would like to drive into the Northern part of Italy. Our main concern is safety and theft. Is the Venise area and the Cinque Terre area ok. Is it easy driving between these 2 areas? We are coming from Lugano Switzerland, Venise to Cinqu Tere back to Kandersteg area.
We have driven all over Italy w/o a problem. We
are careful where we park the car and leave nothing
inside at night and out of sight in the daytime.
If you are using your credit card for the insurance
be sure to check if they cover Italy. OUr MC
does not. And it only covers the car and not
third party or the other car in any country.
You will love Venice and the Cinque Tere.

Follow all of Ricks advise and you should have little problems. If you rent a basic vehicle and park in a secured or well lit area etc it should be all right. However realize there is little parking in CT,it is mostly in lots at the train station except for some street parking in Monterosso al mare.During busy seasonit may be difficult to locate a spot. look into nearby and gorgeous Sta Margarita Ligure and stay at a hotel w/ parking. Ricks guidebooks notes some. I did this in 2004 and was delighted and had secured parking while ferrying to CT.

I drove all over Italy in 2005. The highways are well-marked, and I felt as if I were driving in the USA. I never got the feeling that theft would be a problem. Have a good time.
