Luke, Your question doesn't address which country you want to drive in. But I would be astonished if you would legally be allowed to drive in a foreign country when you don't have sufficient knowledge, experience and skill to have obtained the complete right to drive in Australia by passing your tests. If you are speaking of Continental Europe not only all that but driving on the other side of the road, too? If it is not legal to drive on the roads I would expect that the car hire company would have questions too.

I've been thinking about it since the question was first asked and have come to the same conclusion as Nigel. My only direct experience was a hostel mate a few months back. I wound up driving her out to see some rocks in the Outer Hebrides. I was pooped and just offered her my car. She declined since she had only a provisional license from Vancouver/Canada/BC/everwho issues the things and said she couldn't drive anywhere (with some caveats) much less rent a car.
