Car ferry France to U.K. and back.

We live in the Rennes area and wish to visit friends near Manchester. We'd like to take our own car over and want to do it as cheap as possible. Any suggestions? Our car is an older Renault with R.H. drive we purchased from a British lady, so we have that base covered. One person has suggested flying from Nantes to Stockport, but then we'd have to rent a car. All thoughts appreciated :-)

Well the simplest is probably the St Malo ferry (Portsmouth isn't it?) then A34, M40, M42, M5, M6... That's almost certainly easier than all the way east to Calais then all the way west again to Manchester... That being said the Calais route is cheaper on or under the sea, but add in tolls and petrol (be sure to brim it before coming to England) ...
