Capri worth the expense?

Wondering if Capri is worth all the hype? I've been to many tropical islands as well as islands in Asia. Is Capri really worth seeing if you're not interested in the Blue Grotto? Or is it just a tourist trap? Thanks for your opinions.

No. Next question?

You've already seen the good ones. The village is a crowded mess. Only odd thing is the juxtapostion of expensive shops and junk shops.

And don't get interested in the grotto, either. You've already see better water as well.

I'll give you another point of view. We skipped the tourist shops and the Blue Grotto and spent the day hiking up to the "Villa Jovis," the palace of the Roman emperor Tiberius at the tip-top of the island. It's a wonderful hike and not difficult - the trail is paved all the way. You pass many beautiful estates and you have spectacular views. The palace ruins are very interesting. There are places to stop for a gelato or a drink. It was a wonderful day for us and we really liked Capri.

I guess it depends on where you are coming from. We were staying in Sorrento so it wasn't much of an expense to hop the ferry over to Capri, but I don't think I'd recommend it as a day trip from Rome, or anything.

We didn't go to the Blue Grotto, either. Instead, we took the mini-bus to the chairlift to the top of Mount Solaro and then walked through Anacapri. And despite getting my foot caught in the mini-bus door and despite having a mini-skirmish with my husband and despite it being unseasonably warm, we had a ball and are glad we went.

Then again, I've never been to any islands in Asia. :)

Hi Janine,

I think that Capri is way-touristy but it's something that is worth one trip if you're nearby. I agree with Angela that if you go, you should take the chairlift to Mount Solaro. We did not go to the Blue Grotto.
