Canal view hotel

My husband and I plan to tack a few days stay in Venice before joining a Rick Steves "On Your Own" tour in Vienna. He has never been to Venice before, and we are considering staying at a "canal view" hotel. Our stay there will be 3 nights at the most. Does anyone have a recommendation? We will appreciate the advice! Kind regards, Carla

There will be quite a few people here, Carla, who can contribute suggestions, including myself. I'm afraid your question is a touch vague, though. In order for us to try to help you we need to know a little more about what you want. When you say "canal view" (your quotation marks) you need to define canal view. Would you be happy with a side canal or do you want the Guidecca or Grand Canal? Do you need the view from your room or are you happy with a view from the lounge or breakfast room? What is your budget? What sort of hotel? As you have been to Venice previously, which Sestiere or neighborhood? What time of year? Happy planning...

Last June my husband, daughter, and I stayed at Hotel d'Oro Violino (http://www.violinodoro.com/) and had a wonderful visit. Our lovely room overlooked a canal near a gondola pick-up point, so there was lots of activity (including singing gondoliers floating by). Our booking was a "special offer" which included a bottle of Prosecco with sweet cookies as a welcome in our room, plus a trip by private water taxi to the Island of Murano to see the glass blowers. The water taxi ride was a highlight of our visit, as it snaked through many tiny and interesting canals before getting into more open water to the island. The breakfast buffet was excellent, with an assortment of meats, fruits, breads, cheeses, and coffees. Highly recommended. Buon viaggio! :)
