Can you sleep in Paris train stations?

Hello,

My wife and I are planning a 2.5 weeks trip to France. We plan on flying into Paris, then immediately leave for other parts of the country (Normandy, Alsace, Provence in any order) and then ending in Paris.

I looked at the train schedules on Bahn.de and it looks like it's a 5.5 to 8 hour train ride between Normandy, Alsace and Provence because all trains go through Paris. I found no direct night trains where you leave at night and arrive in the morning without transferring in the middle.

I would like to avoid spending most of the day riding the train and would like to reduce wasted time. I see there are train schedules where you basically get to Paris late at night, and then you have to wait until the morning to take the second leg to get to your destination. Hence my (possibly stupid) question: can you sleep in the Paris train stations? Even if you technically can, is this advisable? If this is not advisable, then is there a better way to travel between these regions?

We are both in our late-20's and we will be backpacking (one carry on sized backpack each). We won't be carrying anything valuable other than a netbook and a point-and-shoot camera.

Thanks!

Eric

Have you thought about flying some of these legs? Or renting a car?

Hanging around the Paris train stations after the last train--not a good idea. There are lots of nice hostels in Paris--what about one of them?

Catching a few winks at an airport is one thing. I wouldn't advise it at train stations...especially in Paris.

I second that, there is just about no way this would be advisable. .

At the Gare du Nord there are always groups of what look like homeless, or maybe just layabouts, sitting on the pavement just outside of the station. If they were allowed to hang about inside they probably would. I think you will be turfed out pretty quickly if it appears you are settling in for the night.

Have you checked out the bus lines for your travels?

This is a pretty common issue for people seeking to zip across France by rail. Paris is the hub, there are different train stations, and the train lines don't all connect.

What most people do is either (1) endure a long and inefficient travel day or (2) rejigger their itinerary so that they break their trip in Paris, spending a few days there.

In your case, (2) could mean proceeding directly to Normandy the morning you arrive (assuming you arrive in Paris), or flying into Provence, etc.

The overwhelming response has confirmed what I had thought, that sleeping at the training station won't work. Thanks everyone!

Why not an inexpensive hotel nearby? It may sound like an unnecessary expense, but I bet you'll be a better citizen after a shower and a night's sleep in a soft bed.

Happy travels.
