Hi folks, trying to sort out a way to see all direct flights from any US city to a specific city in Europe. For example, direct flights to Barcelona, or Lisbon. Is there a search engine that offers that?
Travel with 2 stops is tiring, not to mention risky with possible delays. I'm trying to get creative about options for getting to Europe in only 1 stop, even if that means spending a night or long layover when I arrive in that transfer city.
thanks!
Go to Wikipedia and find the article for the particular European airport that you want to fly to (for instance, search “Barcelona airport.”) The article will include a list of all the airlines that serve that airport and where they fly to directly. Then you can go to the website of the airline that seems to work best and see exactly what is offered.
Skyscanner and Google flights.
I like skyscanner for this type of search. I type in my main airport for From, type in Everywhere for To, click the Nonstop option and nearby airports since I have 3 near me. It’s a nice way to see what’s possible.
Where can you fly direct from St. Louis? Atlanta, Chicago, New York? Then see what flights are available from that city. Sorry to be Debbie Downer, but with all the route cuts since Covid, there may not be any direct flights from the US to some major destinations or the better route may be exorbitantly expensive.
St Louis has a new direct flight to Frankfurt this year on United/Lufthansa.
Skyscanner is my go-to.
Brilliant, thanks everyone.
I am itching to go to Germany just so I can take a nonstop flight to Europe ---- that would be amazing!
And it's not Debbie Downer, it's realistic practicality. We trade money for time and sometimes the Fates play tricks on us.
Just start with any of the standard search engine and limit search to one stop and use a variety of destinations. Madrid could have more options than Barcelona and Chicago would give you more options than St. Louis. Just did a quick check of STL to BCN and there are 29 one stop flights from St. Louis. What are you looking for?
You could also go to the airport's website. It usually has a list of arriving flights for the day and you can see where the flights are arriving from.
I've never lived anywhere that has direct flights to Europe-if you're interested, go soon-the airline will take away that flight if it's not used a lot.
Just a note, if you use Skyscanner are any of these third-party sites and they take you to KIWI Or any other cheap ticket flogger back away from the computer. if it’s not available directly with an airline you don’t want to book it. Some of these things will come up with these great deals and then you start realizing that what they just did was put you on impossible connections. I have literally seen people buy flights from Nashville to BWI on Southwest and then getting out of Dullus an hour later on United. It doesn’t work. And of course these third-party cheap travel floggers just say “you got your ticket you’re a stuck” if you go on TripAdvisor you read this kind of thing once a week easy
Good point Carol. After checking Skyscanner, Kayak, Google or any other website/app to look for inexpensive flights, head directly to the airline’s own website to book.
You may also find a cheaper price with your initial search but it will often be for the most basic level of flight, no seat assignment, checked luggage, etc. When you get to the airline’s own website check carefully to purchase the level of ticket/class that works best for you.
I feel your pain Suzanne, I live about 100 miles south of St. Louis, and it is tiring having to make the connections. You could drive to Chicago where there are several direct flights to European destinations. I have done that before and spent the night on both ends but then there are no cost savings. (I also have a 2-hour drive southwest of St. Louis to also consider). As someone mentioned, there is a direct flight from St. Louis to Frankfort on Lufthansa. Not sure how long it will last. Carriers seem to come and go from St. Louis.
I always book with the airline. Don't book with any third-party sites. AA and United have hubs in Chicago. Delta has hubs in Minneapolis and Detroit. My preferred route is St. Louis to Detroit, Detroit to Europe on Delta. If I am going to London, I like the AA daytime flight from Chicago. Get the first flight out of St. Louis to Chicago, then take the 9:00 am flight into London you will arrive at 10:00 pm and can go to bed. These seem to be the easiest routes for jetlag.
Suzanne, a day flight to London is wonderful-we just did it for the first time from Kennedy this summer and will definitely do it again.
It's easy to find the direct flights from the desitnation city. For instance, these are all the direct flights to Rome:

You can also add the US city, of course. I did that to find all direct flights from Seattle (there are only 7 to Europe):

Thanks everyone. These are options I was not aware of. I am considering trips to Spain and Morocco, so I picked Barcelona at random, did not realize there are quite a few direct flights from US there. On the other hand, getting to/from Morocco looks tricky. I'm going to play around with these tools.
And thanks for the reminder to always book directly with the airline.
Thanks to those of you who share my pain, appreciate the empathy!
