Can you drive from Wurzburg to Rhineland-Palatinate?

My new husband and I are going to Germany for the 1st time for our honeymoon in a few weeks. We are renting a car in Garmisch, Germany and heading up the Romantic Road (1 night in Fussen & 2 nights in Rothenburg). Then we plan on exploring the Rhineland-Palatinate region for the next 2 days. Is it possible/smart for us to keep driving...all the way from Wurzburg to Rhineland-Palatinate, specifically to Oberwesel (staying at Castle Hotel Auf Schonburg), near Bacharach? It would be nice to have a car when we're there so we can really explore those areas. Any suggestions?

Keep the car. Wurzburg to Oberwesel is less than a 2 hour drive; actually a shorter distance than from Füssen to Wurzburg. It's easy driving in Germany - roads are kept in good condition and routes well marked.

"I drove it in reverse..." Wow, that must have been tough on the transmission! ;)

Hi Georgina,

Congratulations!

On your way from Garmisch to Fuessen, if you have time, see "Mad" King Ludwig's Linderhof. If you're going to see Neuschwanstein, Hohenschwangau is alo very interesting plus the Tegelberg cable car (and luge ride) is about a mile from there.

In Rothenburg, the Nightwatchman Tour was an excellent way to spend an hour. Witty and informative. It starts at 8pm in the market square in front of town hall. No tix or reservations needed. Just show up at 8pm. Also, in St. Jacobs church (Rothenburg), walk up the stairs in the back to see Tilmann Riemenschneider's 500 year old wood carved alter. A masterpiece!

On the Rhine, Marksburg castle is a "must see" in my opinion.

If you have time, Burg Eltz (on the Mosel) is our favorite castle in Germany (so far).

Hope this helps.
