My aunt and I are going to London Tues for 9 days. We are going to get Travel cards (so we can get the 2 for 1 deals) but will need a 7 day card and then a 3 day card. They have to be bought at a train station. Does anyone know if you can buy a 7 day card and then a 3 day card that starts when the 7 day card is up or will we need to look up a train station at the end of 7 days? LWS
You can buy them in advance but you'll need to make sure you go to a ticket window with a human: I think machines usually won't sell them in advance.
Are you talking about the 7 day/3 day travel cards for the tube? You can get them at any tube station.

If you want to use the 2 for 1 offers you must buy the paper travecards, with the "birdsfoot" logo, from a national rail station not a tube station. This is because the national train companies sponsor the offers.
As to your original question, I'm not sure because I have sometimes had problems buying a rail travelcard in advance but things change. But don't worry there are train stations scattered all over London. The most central being Charing Cross, just off Trafalgar Square. Another one near a tourist area is Victoria at Victoria St/Buckingham Palace Rd. There are several others on the edge of the main areas eg Waterloo, Kings Cross/St Pancras, Euston, St Marylebone, London Bridge, Cannon Street and Liverpool Street but all are easily reachable by tube.
