I am planning a trip between Italy and France and have been trying to check pricing between buying a Rail pass or individual tickets. The problem is that I cannot find any current ticket fares for oneway trips (ie Venice to Avignon, Cinque terre to Savona). I can get train times and specifics on DB Bahn and other sites BUT CAN FIND NO PRICING INFO!!! It just says that the tickets "can not be purchased online." How can I check prices if I cannot find any Pricing details. Thanks.
Nikki,
I hate to ask but why are you looking on DB for travel between Italy and France? Either way you may be having an issue buying online because you would be transferring from trenitalia to sncf. Or your date of travel might just be too far in the future.
Try rail europe, they will give you a price with the connection between the two rail lines. Although it would probably be cheaper just to buy the ticket on the day of travel rather than using rail europe.
Hope I was of help.
When researching a trip within Italy (CT to Savona), use the Italian rail website (www.trenitalia.com).
CLICK HERE to see a sample schedule from Monterosso to Savona. Click on the red shopping cart to the right and select "STANDARD" under "Fare". You'll see the one way fares.
Using the same website, I can't bring up Venice/Avignon but I can see Venice/Nice Ville. It's 55Euro.
DB Bauhn was recommended somewhere on Rick's site. I have tried rail Europe and Trenitailia but neither can give me either pricing or the ability to purchase online.
Do you think I could wait until the day of to buy? Being that I am traveling around Easter I was a bit nervous about waiting until the last minute.
Several posters on this site recommend www.bahn.de. It really is a great site. But, it doesn't provide pricing outside of Germany. For pricing in Italy, use www.trenitalia.com. For buying tickets in Italy, people with American credit cards cannot buy directly from the www.trenitalia.com website. Up to the middle of last year, you could. I did. However, you can see great detail on the pricing and travel times. Next, what you don't see often enough is pricing on the less expensive R train runs. Trenitalia usually doesn't list them more than several days out.
Your one-way 2nd class fare from Monterosso to Savona is 6.90Euro if you buy the ticket there which is all you need to do. It's a local train. Raileurope will sell you the same ticket for 22.66Euro (almost 4 times as much). I looked it up).
Learning to play on the train websites can be frustrating. Practice, practice, practice. I'm doing nothing more on the website than you can do with a bit of practice.
DB was only noted on this site as a place to check schedules....and for pricing for trips that begin and/or end in Germany. If you can't get pricing on either Trenitalia or RailEurope (which will sell you tickets at outrageously high prices) then you are looking too far into the future. Trenitalia will only let you see 60 days into the future. And for multi-segment journeys across international borders, you must break it down into segments. I find Venice-Nice at 55 Euro and Nice-Avignon as low as 22 Euro (on the French national rail site, tgv-europe.com). La Spezia-Savona comes in at 11 Euro. Trenitalia has been, for some time, unwilling to cope with American credit cards. So you can either purchase the tickets as soon as you arrive in Italy (and check to see if any are eligible for the 20% off "Amica" fares) or you can pay more and get them thru RailEurope. BTW, you are aware that there are only 3 daytime trains/day Venice-Avignon, and the trip will take 12 hours?
The DB site is the best timetable site for virtually all of Europe. However, the only tickets you can buy on that site are for routes within Germany and individual legs that either begin or end in Germany. The Trenitalia site will give you both timetables and fares up to 90 days in advance for individual international legs that either begin or end in Italy and up to 60 days in advance for routes solely within Italy. (Exception: No reservations are possible on regional trains so the Trenitalia site only shows fares for them a few days in advance.) FYI, the fare for Vernazza-Savona is €6.90.
Use the DB site to get timetables for Venezia Santa Lucia-Avignon TGV. After you get summary timetables, click on "Details for all" to see the connecting points. You can travel either during the day or overnight. To get the fares for this route you'll have to price the legs separately using more than one rail site. For example, if you pick the Venezia-Milano-Nice-Aix-Avignon route, you can get fares for Venezia-Milano-Nice on the Trenitalia site. If you can handle French, you can get fares for Nice-Aix-Avignon on the French national rail site, www.voyages-sncf.com. If not, go to www.tgv-europe.com. To keep everything in English and to avoid being bumped to the Rail Europe site whose timetables are incomplete and whose fares are inflated, choose Great Britain as both your country of residence and the country in which you will retrieve your ticket. Don't worry. You'll be able to pick up your tickets at the station in Nice.
