Can I take a fold up cane in my suitcase? Would it be a problem?

I had bought a fold up cane a few years ago in England, before 9/11 happened. I had a knee replacement and would like to take it to Italy Friday with me in case I need it. Would this be a problem in check baggage? it is metal. Thanks

I don't see why not? The worse that could happen is that they will open up your suitcase & check it out. To be absolutely sure, call the airlines and speak to a person (not a computer, I hate speaking to those things when I have a special problem!) about your cane. Good luck!

I have traveled extensively with my fold up cane in my carryon the last three years....both domestically and internationally. It has never been questioned. (I have often wondered why no one has asked, but no one has)

As long as it is checked luggage there will be no problem. All of the major airlines have information on their website regarding what can and cannot be included in your luggage.

Marie,

I found this on the TSA website:

Disability-related items permitted through the security checkpoint include:

Wheelchairs
Scooters
Crutches
Canes
Walkers
Prosthetic devices
Casts
Support braces
Support appliances
Service animals
Baby apnea monitors
Orthopedic shoes
Exterior medical devices
Assistive/adaptive equipment
Augmentation devices
Ostomy supplies
CPAP machines & respirators
Hearing aids
Cochlear implants
Tools for wheelchair disassembly/reassembly
Personal supplemental oxygen
CO2 personal oxygen concentrators
Tools for prosthetic devices
Medications and associated supplies
Braille note takers
Slate and stylus
All diabetes related medication, equipment, and supplies
Any other disability-related equipment and associated supplies

So, you can certainly take this with you on the plane if you choose to rather than put it in checked luggage.

Thanks to all who replied. I think I will put it in my checked luggage and have it if I need it.

Don't forget, if you check it/put it in the belly of the aircraft you will not be able to access it at all once you board the aircraft!

If you have a disability of some sort and feel you may need it on board it's best to bring it on board with you.

It will not be a problem whatsoever!
