Hello All, I will be in Barcelona and I want to send my bags to Madrid 1 week or so before I fly home from Madrid. What is the cheapest way to do this. I thought I might be able to do it free with my Eurail pass and only pay for the storage in madrid. Any help you can give me will always be much appreciated. tk
Tina, AFAIK, you won't be able to "send" your bags from one city to another using your Railpass. A pass is intended to act as a "ticket", which means that passengers must accompany their luggage. It might be possible to use a Courier (UPS, FedEx) and have them hold for pickup, but I suspect it would be very expensive. Good luck!
Tina, Have you travelled with a Eurail pass before? I ask only to make sure you understand that when travelling by train in Europe, you're responsible for your luggage at all times. Unlike airlines, where your bags are checked through to your destination, there's nothing like that for trains. You don't check any luggage, meaning you are responsible for getting it on the train, stowing it, getting it off the train, etc, etc..
Have a great trip!
German Rail apparently has a courier service (page in German) through a third party service, Hermes. But it's not free. Looks like it costs, €13,80 per bag up to 25 kg. There is also another page for Haus-zu-Haus for €16,80 up to 30 kg. This service looks like it is only for Germany, but Spain might have something similar. Google Hermes.
In Spain you can use the postal service Paquete Azul system to ship luggage. They will hold it at the post office for 30 days.

Having used the Spanish postal system to ship things before (not my luggage), I'd be pretty leary of using that service.
I have used it several times with no problems at all.
thank you all for your help. BTW, I have traveled with a Eurail pass but not for many years and at that time you were able to check bags with a porter if you wanted and then had to pick them up in baggage. If you wanted, they would hold them for a number of days for a charge but as I said that was a number of years ago and maybe not in every country. Happy Travels TK
