Can I go straight to the security line?

Hi! I'll be flying on UA through Newark to Lisbon next month. I will check in online and I'm not going to check luggage. I've uploaded my passport information to the UA "Travel Ready" center. Once I arrive at my airport, will I still need to stop by the UA ticket desk for them to check my passport, etc., or can I go straight to security?
Thanks!

If you can get your boarding pass, you can go right to security. They'll check your passport at the gate.

You can certainly try to check in online, and you might be successful. But you may not want to count on that, and you should be prepared with a Plan B in case you are unable to (and that Plan B should allow plenty of time at the airport for old-school check-in if needed). These days, I think it's not uncommon for many people to find they can't check in online for a variety of reasons (additional, manual document checks, failed/overwhelmed systems, etc.).

This summer, it's wise to prepare to be flexible in all things when traveling, online check-in is one example.

I've never been able to check online for an international flight. Odds are you'll have to still go to the ticket counter.

Thank you all! I'll hope for the best - checking in online, and prepare for the worst- having to wait in the line. I appreciate your input.

Hopefully you will be successful. We just flew back from England and were able to check in and do boarding passes on the United app. We are going to Merida tomorrow and I was able to do it again. Fingers crossed for you.

As your passport is uploaded and if nothing else is required, you should be ready to go on UA. Unless things have changed on the UA website you should get a green travel ready mark on your reservation.

However, keep monitoring as the rules can change in a heartbeat!

I've never been able to check in online for an international flight, although I've tried many times. (I always get the prompt to do so from the airlines, though!) I'm going to try again for a PIT-LIS flight in July (no checked luggage).

Hi, on the way to Italy, Delta wouldn’t let me check in on-line. But on the way back from Rome, I was able to check in on-line and go straight to my gate. At the gate, they rechecked my passport, pit the little sticker on the back of my passport and also printed out paper boarding tickets for all three of my flights home.

Could this have something to do with the whether or not you are a "Known Traveler" with the particular airline you are flying? Delta has all of my info on file and it never seems to be a problem.

No way to know. There are lots of potential variables (systems not working, systems overloaded, extra security alerts, changing document requirements, current events, and more), and remember: things change all the time, so your prior experience is no guarantee that your next experience will match it.

Online check-in is great when you can do it. But never rely on being able to do it -- give it a try, but be prepared to check in at the airport (and allow time for standing in long lines) if needed -- because you will only know if you can check-in online (or not) when you actually attempt to do so.

My sister and I recently flew to and from from Israel on AA. When I tried to check us both in online, it initially said we would need to check in at the airport. I then just checked us in one at a time and it worked, both ways.

I would say no. I've had my Known Traveler Number on the Delta website since I first got it in about 2016. I have never been able to check in online but in April, leaving from the same airport Jean leaves from, I was able to check in and print/upload boarding passes for both segments of my flights to Europe. I had been able to upload stuff (finally!) to Delta's FlyReady app. On my return from Amsterdam although I finally got my negative covid test result loaded into the app, I could not do the online check in.

As David says....try it but don't RELY on it!
