I'd like to purchase the Rick Steves 21" Rollaboard, but the depth is 9", and Veuling Airlines specifies 7". Will they make me check this? I'm wondering if anyone has taken this piece of luggage on Veuling Air in Europe.
No experience with Veuling. However, the discount airlines are notorious for rigid enforcement of carry on standards. That is where they pick up a lot of fees. You might sneak a half inch pass them but would doubt two inches would fly.
Actually, Veuling allows 20 cm, which is 7-7/8", more but still less than 9". Will they check the size? Probably not. But since they have specified 20 cm, they have every right to check it and to say you can't carry it on, and you have no argument. More important, however, is the 10 kg (22 lb) limit. Since the bag weighs over 7 lb empty, 1/3rd of what you will carry is the bag, and you only get 15 lb of your own stuff. With a 2# convertible bag, everything would only weigh 17lb, hardly justifying 5 more pounds in order to roll it. Or, with a 2 lb convertible you could take 20 lb, 33% more, of you own stuff.
Check the bag,, and pay for it online IN ADVANCE,, or it will cost you at airport. I have flown Vueling, and I checked my roll on . They are strict,, as are most of the inter Europeon airlines. And the charge for gate check is highest of all,, so trying to sneak it by is useless. if you self check in and make it to gate to board with suitcase, it can still be rejected and you made to pay to have the most expensive option. I do not understand why in the scheme of things one would risk it, your whole trip is worth thousands,, don't risk a screw up to save 10-15 euros. Its a decent airline,, and I wouldn't worry too much about losing your suitcase as you are not transferring or connecting flights( thats where I think alot of luggage gets lost) ,, just make sure your bag is labelled and tagged well. Remove old tags from other flights.
We've flown Vueling often to Barcelona, Malaga, Valencia and Paris and on most of those flights anyone with a "questionable" bag was asked to put it in the "measuring device." And yes, they were required to check their bag. RyanAir is perhaps the toughest I've encountered but we now fly easyjet more often and they seem to be on a "revenue" search... Sign of the times I suppose.
Have you seen the new rolling bag Rick Steves is selling? It's 20 x 14 x 7 and weighs just over 5 1/2 lbs. (It also has backpack straps.) It should fit in most sizers.
"Have you seen the new rolling bag Rick Steves is selling? It's 20 x 14 x 7" Wow! They've almost got something there. Rectangular shaped, full opening, hide away straps, smaller volume at 1960 cu in. Now if they'd just get rid of the wheels, make it soft, and lose about 3½#, they'd have something worth buying.
I'm not sure how much you can get in a 21" compared to my mesh backpack, but that's what I've transitioned to as I fly Ryanair a lot. It might only be 8 oz. less than a regular backpack, but half a pound is half a pound! And since on one of my recent trips I was right on the money at 10kg...Can you carry a backpack??
Definitely check it in advance ... the price is better and you'll have less stress on the day of travel. I've used Vueling, and though i really enjoyed their customer service and the experience overall, like most budget airlines, they're really strict on sizing.
Thanks for all the great advice. I will definitely have a bag that fits the bill, and not try to squeeze an extra inch onboard.
