I'm planning a family trip to Italy, flying open jaw. Into Rome, out of Venice. Have searched on all the discount airline sites and haven't had any luck. It seems the ticket price quoted is pretty much the same price as the airline itself is advertising. Am I missing something? Will be going in mid-April.
I've never found significant differences in the price on the various sites, unless you choose one of those "pig-in-a-poke" connections, where they don't tell you the exact times, the airline, or the connecting cities or layover times. I won't take that bait. There are departure/arrival times at Denver that are too inconvenient for transportation, airlines I won't fly, and cities I don't want to connect in. Other people feel the same way about the same times, airlines, and cities, so those are the connection they will offer blind at a fare too good to be true.
Sometimes an expedia/orbitz will pair multiple airlines to take down the price you might get flying just one carrier. Otherwise it is hard to find a price reduction. At one time you could find savings, but the airlines have worked hard to ensure they offer the best pricing directly to the consumer. In fact, some airlines now offer a best price guarantee. There are a few other options. You could try to find a consolidator (they purchase blocks of seats in advance), however, there are drawbacks to them. Some of these outfits are shady with questionable business practices. Priceline allows blind bidding, but you never know exact connections or times until after you have purchased.
