Hi, we are planning our first trip to Europe in June for 30 days. As outdoor enthusiasts, we originally hatched our plan around the idea of renting a campervan in AMS and driving (RT) throughout France to the Basque country Provence and a possible stop to see friends in Florence, Italy. since then, we have learned about cheap flights via Ryan Air, and again our plans are up all in the air. any advice on renting a campervan in AMS? We realize that 30 days is too short and we may skip the Florence leg of this trip. Above all we need to save on lodging and would also benefit from some advice on "glamping" and cool camp sites with a connection to nature anywhere along this trip.
You see darn few of them. I think it would be a faux savings.
I just looked here: http://goeurope.about.com/gi/o.htm?zi=1/XJ/Ya&zTi=1&sdn=goeurope&cdn=travel&tm=38&gps=464_625_1588_805&f=00&tt=14&bt=0&bts=0&zu=http%3A//www.motorhome-hire-france.com/
and it seems that two weeks in May in France (Lyon is what I think I hit) would cost about $2400. A small car for the same period looks to cost about $475.
I have no idea what the fuel differential would be.
Budget hotels of the ETAP variety abound in France and run from $50 to $60 per night.
I spend about three months a year driving in Europe, I would not care to do one inch of it in a camper.
The price of motor gasoline is near $7 per gallon in France, which I mention since it sounds like you're comparing the cost of driving a camper van versus the within-Europe budget airline flights.
