I have a digital SLR, and it's not exactly lightweight, so I am concerned about it adding to my carry-on weight. Is it acceptable to just wear it around my neck when boarding? (We are flying Lufthansa.)
I'll be interested to see the responses. For security, you'll need to be able to put it in a bag. They won't want it loose. You certainly can't where it around your neck when you go through security, It might be a different issue for the airlines.
Interesting. I have taken my camera bag as carry on and it has gone through security. To place it around your neck to avoid weight in the carry on is interesting. I've flown Lufthansa but I can't be sure about their response at the check-in counter. Lufthansa's carryon weight limit for coach is 8kg (17.4lbs).
I came home from a conference a couple of years ago with my credentials pouch still around my neck (OK...I was in a rush). They made me take that off before they'd let me thru security!
My experience with security has been that they don't care about your weight limit or how many bags you have. Is it the same for international? I was thinking about putting the camera around my neck after security but before boarding.
my experience with them weighing my bags was not at the gate or at security but before that at the check-in counter! maybe some airports have scales at the gates, but i've personally never seen it here or over in Europe... so I say if you can get through check-in with it around your neck, you should be fine. Is it in its own bag? in that case, it could even count as your "personal item" in addition to your carry-on bag.
Cate, Debra has it correct. It's not the security or boarding that will get you. It's the check-in counter before you get to either security or boarding. They weigh things there.
However, if you are able to check in online and avoid the check-in counter, you should be safe. Security will only require that the camera go through the scanner. And, I don't think that there are weight scales at the check in counter. However, airlines are getting better at enforcing those sizing boxes. If it doesn't fit, it gets checked. It doesn't seem to be weight that they are after - it's size.
