Calling train experts: Getting from Rome to Munich

I'm looking at my options of getting from Rome to Munich. There is a flight on Atalia ($661.00 for three) plus cost to airport. I also am looking into trains. From what I can see it looks like an overnight train in a three bed compartment car is $696.00 for three. A day time train is about $510.00 total. We will travel on Oct. 6th. I'm not sure if I'm checking it correctly, does that sound correct?

It's a little early to be booking train reservations, but Bahn.de shows an EC connection in May for €33 pP on a Europa-Spezial fare. That's a day train leaving Rome at 7:42 and arriving in Munich at 6:34 PM. Since you are giving your prices in us$, I suspect you are getting your quotes from RailEurope. There are better places to go.

You might look into the budget airlines. Air Berlin, German Wings and Condor all have flights from Rome-FCO to Munich-MUC

If you book far enough ahead (up to 90 days allowed) at www.bahn.de, you can get a Europa-Spezial Italien fare of 387€ for three people in a three-person sleeper.

I did get my fares from Bahn.de but just converted them myself to dollars so I'm comparing apples to apples.

I would hate to count on getting the special, especially since the regular price is so much higher. What do you think the chance is that Europa-Spezial Italien would be available when I need to purchase? Should I assume I could get it?

Thank you very much!

Can you believe that German Wings and Air Berlin are both sold out on that day? Also, Condor will no longer fly that route after May.

Looks like Atitalia (661.00 USD) or train all day long or all night. If I was sure to get the special, the train may not be too bad for the price. Any thoughts?

I was stunned to look that far ahead on German Wings and see that date already sold out (I looked when I posted above). Trenitalia has recently announced international trains on their website. There is a night train from Rome to Munich with a SMART FARE 2nd class seat starting at 29Euro. CLICK HERE to see this page. Read the conditions carefully. Click on SMART fares and read those conditions as well. Lastly, I don't think you can book October at this time. I can see the night train for October 6, but it won't let you buy tickets.

The discount fares on the German rail site and the Italian rail site are offered year-round. However, there are a limited number of seats available so it's important to book as soon as possible (up to 90 days in advance is allowed for international routes).
