Buying UK train tix online when unsure of exact time of travel

My plane will (allegedly) land at LHR T5 at 12:30 p.m. on a Friday in mid-September. I want to go directly to Bath for the Best of England tour that begins on Sunday. I plan to take the Heathrow Express to Paddington to catch the Bath train. I’m budgeting an hour from the time my plane lands to disembark, get through passport control, go to baggage claim, and walk to the Express. I’m hoping this means I will arrive at Paddington around 2:00 p.m. Just to be on the safe side, though, I’m going to buy online (probably from National Rail’s website) a ticket for the train that departs to Bath around 3:00 p.m. (the September train schedule is not online yet but I’m assuming times don’t change drastically), and I’m hoping to do this as early as possible (maybe mid-June) to get the reduced prices.

So, say I advance-purchase a ticket for the 3:00 p.m. train, but I get to Paddington early enough to catch the 2:30 train. Can I use my ticket on that earlier train? But what if I get to Paddington after 3:00: will I have to purchase a whole new ticket at same-day walk-up prices, or will the value of my ticket be credited toward the purchase of a new ticket? Basically, I’m trying to figure out whether the savings from an advance purchase is worth it when I can’t say for certain what time I’ll actually be able to catch the train.

I know I’m probably making this more difficult than it is, but for someone who only has the opportunity to take trains while in Europe it’s a lot to think about! My apologies for the length of this post. Any tips or advice is very welcome.

(BTW, I know there’s a bus that goes directly from LHR to Bath, but after getting off a 9-hour+ flight, spending another 3-4 hours on a bus does not appeal.)

If you are buying an 'Advance' type ticket with a capital A it can only be used on the service it is booked on. Changes can be made in some circumstances for a fee and difference in fare, but not at a few minutes notice, so you cannot just use an earlier train. If you are too late you will need to buy the fare appropriate for the service you take and your Advance is not worth anything towards it.

Consider taking the railair coach to Reading and the train to Bath from there. This can work out cheaper and indeed quicker than going the wrong way to London.

Advance-rate tickets are nonrefundable. Exchange options may vary by train operator, but don't expect any to apply after the departure of the scheduled train. If buying a ticket in the station, you'll pay the Off Peak rate for afternoon travel.

First Great Western has this info when you click through to buy a ticket on this route:

Changes to time or date of travel must be arranged before departure of the first reserved train printed on the ticket, after which the ticket has no value and a new one must be purchased. Customers will need to present the ticket(s) and reservation(s) when they request a change.

Changes to tickets cannot be made on-board the train. If customers board a train without a ticket and reservation for that service, a new ticket must be purchased.

The origin, destination and Train Company or route shown on the ticket(s) must remain the same.

The difference between the price paid and cost of the next suitable fare for the journey is payable, plus a £10 administration fee per person, per single ticket for each change to a journey. If customers change to a train on which a cheaper fare is available, the difference will not be refunded.

When you purchase a ticket at discount on-line, it is specific to that train, date, time, and seat number. Cannot go early or late since you don't possess a valid ticket for those trains. Ticket pricing for trains is coming closer to the ticket pricing for US airlines.

Well, poo. I may just have to grin and bear it and pay a same-day fare. At least I will avoid stressing about getting from LHR to Paddington on time to catch a specific train.

Thanks for the info!

I would not risk it because if you missed your train you would have to buy a new ticket and your pre booked ones are non-refundable

Have you considered taking the National Express bus that leaves from Heathrow and goes directly to the Bath bus station? It can cost as little as £12 and you are there with out backtracking and taking 2 modes of transportation with a potential train change in Slough. The bus can take as little as 2 1/2 hours.
