Buying Trenitalia tickets online from USA?

Earlier this week we had a conversation with Lisa, the Rick Steves's amazing travel consultant. She recommended we purchase our Trenitalia ticket online prior to our trip. I signed on to the Trenitalia website to obtain our one-way ticket from Venice to Rome. I make online purchases regularly, but something about this one has been strange.

Supposedly this is the official site, https://us.trenitalia.it-inter.com/booking. After entering our info, names, passport numbers, etc. following to the booking page, entered credit card info the transaction didn't complete. Today I received an email from them indicating I needed to complete the transaction. The website is connected with a phone number in NY that is answered by 'Associated Cargo Specialists" and I was to dial an extension for help with Trenitalia. The extension number connected me with an individual person's voicemailbox.

I'm wondering if anyone else has had experience with this site, or doing it this way, or if I've accidentally shared all this information with a bogus site. Help!

Kimberly, your link comes up with this message:

"An Error Was Encountered
The page you are trying to view does not exist and it also appears as if the 404 page has been deleted."

This is the Trenitalia link I'd use:
http://www.trenitalia.com/tcom-en

I too have always just used the Italian site, not this US site listed in the first post. Could be legit (looks like it) but not sure. Looks like a US agent for Trenitalia. I don't see what benefit you get from using them vs. going directly to Trenitalia. But if you have already completed the transaction and credit card has been charged, I guess you need to follow up as required.

If not, you could also try Trenitalia's "Trenit" app if you have a smart phone - you can buy train tickets with that (also very handy Or if you want to see not just Trenitalia trains but also Italo trains on the same Venice-Rome route, try www.trainline.eu which others here have recommended and looks easy to use.

I could open the site using https://us.trenitalia.it-inter.com, and yes, it looks like a US agent for Trenitalia. I didn't know that aperture existed as I've always just gone directly to the Italian site (which provides a tab for English).

Thank you all so very much. I was able to log in to the actual Trenitalia site and have secured our tickets. This forum is great!

Trenitalia’s app is also easy to use for purchasing tickets and checking schedules.
