Is it a bad idea to wait to buy a few of the tickets until I get to europe? I just can't find a cheap one between Paris and Italy.

Two thoughts. The least expensive train fares that you will find AND can buy online from Paris to Italy can be found on www.tgv-europe.com. Choose Great Britain as you country to keep the website in English and choose Great Britain as the place where you will pick up your tickets to keep the website from switching the the more expensive RailEurope. You can pick up your tickets at the rail stations in France. No you don't have to go to England.
Second, thought. There are inexpensive budget airlines that fly from either Paris-CDG or Paris-Orly to several airports in Italy. You can check them out at www.whichbudget.com.
