Buying tickets through ItaliaRail

Hello,
I am trying to purchase tickets through ItaliaRail but have some questions. We have three adults and three kids. I see on the website that kids under 11 may be able to travel free or at least 50% off the ticket price. However when I selected the time I want and put the tickets in the basket, I am being charged for 4 adults and 2 kids and the prices still seems to be full fare for adults. Why is this happening? I want to buy tickets from Venice to Florence, and then Florence to Rome.
Thank you for your advise.

I checked at http://www.trenitalia.com/tcom-en for a random date in October for the trip Florence-Rome.
For some reason it didn't accept tickets for six, telling five is the maximum. So I first selected tickets for 3 adults, which came at some EUR 117, and then for 3 children, for which it quoted EUR 60. Exactly the 50 percent discount you'd expect.

I don't know ItaliaRail. I always use trenitalia.com, directly with the Italian railways.
Trenitalia.com speaks English, but only knows the Italian originals of the city names. So it is Venezia (with S. Lucia as the station you want), Firenze (Santa Maria Novella or S.M.N.) and Roma (Termini).

I don't know if the results would be the same, but you can also buy tickets for trains in Italy at www.capitainetrain.com (prices are the same as if buying through Trenitalia). You'd have to register on the site, but I've found it to be very user friendly.

Trenitalia.com works perfectly. Paying by credit card. Printing at home. No registering. No creating accounts. No hidden fees. Why try something else?

www.italiarail.com does charge a small commission, so try the main site, www.trenitalia.com first.
Because it is a maximum of 5 persons per order, start with 2 adults and 3 children. You will get the "Bimbi Gratis" fare. I see Economy price for October 21 for Firenze S. M. Novella to Roma Termini available in the morning for 86 euro total. Then buy one more adult ticket at 43 euro. That would give a total price of 129 euro, which is the price of 3 adults at 43 euro each and the kids are free.

In my experience, if you can get supereconomy tickets 120 days out from travel then this is cheaper than geting the discounted family ticket options.
