Does it make a difference if I register for the site before I buy. What are the down sides to not registering?

May not be able to purchase. Some have reported success without registering others have report that it is easier if registered and especially if have a verified VISA card.

Using advice from others, I registered and our three purchases -- Roma Termini to Venezia S. Lucia, Venezia Santa Lucia to Firenza Santa Maria Novella, then Firenza S. M. Novella to Roma Termini went like clockwork but you have to use the Italian names. We played around with various options and times before we made the actual purchase with our Visa card. We opted for 1st class and bought the nonrefundable tickets at 120 days prior to travel date. The print out we got at home has a code to scan once on board.

I can't find it now, but others here have mentioned that if you don't get the e-mail with your PNR (which serves as your ticket) and have registered, it's easy to retrieve. If you haven't registered and don't get your e-mail, it's much more difficult.
