Would like to hear experiences from people who have bought plane fare through discount web sites such as orbitz, priceline, etc. Also, I have heard that fares are cheaper if tickets are bought in a 69-day window. Book no more than 90 days in advance or fewer than 21. Would experienced travelers agree with this? We are leaving for London on Sept 18 and coming back Oct 3.
Carol, Generally my answer on buying tickets for a trip like this is it depends on how flexible you are. It sounds like you need to travel on these days exactly. Since you are traveling at the end of high season you may have some luck waiting to find cheaper tickets. The 69 day window has worked for me, but I haven't been willng to take a chance on my trip in the 20 day window. I watch ticket prices all the time and see cheap flights for the current month, but again they are based on availability and if they aren't available, you might end up paying more than the slightly higher prices available a bit earlier. I checked PDX to LON this morning and the prices are $200 less right now for Sept. than we are paying for our July trip.
Carol, what you could do is monitor the development of your fares via www.farecast.com.
www.zuji.com will let you do flexible date international flight searches...like Travelocity used to do.
