One hint is that the Trenitalia train website does not accept U.S. credit cards. Also, if you are trying to buy Regionale train runs more than a week out, the site won't even let you proceed. Where are you going from and to? Which museums?

Not worth buying train tickets online for Italy. I wasted a lot of time trying, but as Larry said, they wont take US c.cards. You may be able to reserve seats, then pay at the train station, IF you are able to get "Amica" discounted rate. Just show them your printout with reservation number.

I reserved my time slot for the Accademia in Florence, bec. of the warning of long lines. True enough, they have people in line waiting, while I just showed my printout reservation to the guards and went straight to cashier.....weird part is, they did not even look at what's written on the paper I was showing them!!!

I used the museum site listed in Rick Steves book to reserve our Accademia and Ufizi tickets. You get a confirmation e-mail. Be sure to bring a printed copy of that with you. The ticket then costs 10 euros (Academia.) We went there today. The line for general admission was more than 2 blocks long. We just walked past those poor hot people to the "WITH RESERVATIONS" sign. We waited in line less than 2 minutes before entering. So, the moral of the story -- get a reservation for both museums.

Not really true (or at least it wasn't back in 2007). I successfully purchased Amica fare tickets with a US credit card without any problems. It seems that some people are able to buy tickets from Trenitalia and some are not, with little rhyme or reason.
